The Delhi High Court has stepped in to review a case tied to the 2020 communal riots after a student activist sought intervention on procedural grounds. Devangana Kalita, an accused in the case, called for the preservation of the case diary, alleging the police inserted backdated statements.
Justice Jasmeet Singh issued a notice to the Delhi Police, demanding a status report as the court moves towards potential reconsideration of the trial's procedural elements. Kalita's legal team argued that unjust additions to the diary challenged legal boundaries and required immediate court action.
The ongoing case stems from violent clashes in northeast Delhi in February 2020, resulting in significant casualties. The court will decide on November 25 whether further scrutiny of the police's handling of diary records is warranted to ensure justice and transparency in the trial.
