In a bold move aimed at preserving national security, the Indian government has declared the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), an insurgent faction in Meghalaya, a banned organization for a duration of five years.
The Union Home Ministry issued a notification asserting that HNLC's activities, which include violent incidents and attempts to secede regions inhabited by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes, undermine India's sovereignty and integrity.
With alliances formed with other northeastern insurgent groups and involvement in 48 criminal cases, HNLC's continued intimidation reiterates the need for prohibiting its operations. The government's action underlines a firm stance against such threats.
