A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a Delhi court for raping an eight-year-old girl, a crime committed in April 2016. The court described the rape of a child as an 'atrocious' act underscoring the societal obligation to guard and keep children safe from sexual violence.

Judge Babita Puniya, dismissing calls for a lenient sentence due to digital penetration, stated that the law makes no distinction between digital and other forms of penetration. The sentence aims to balance crime and punishment, offering just retribution and adequate societal protection while allowing room for the convict's rehabilitation.

The verdict, dated November 11, also includes a compensation award of Rs 13.5 lakh to the victim. Special Public Prosecutor Sharawan Kumar Bishnoi called for the maximum punishment for the heinous crime, emphasizing the need for justice to be fully served.
