Arvind Panagariya, the Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission, called for rural and urban local bodies to enhance their resource mobilization to better meet the demands and expectations of citizens. Speaking at the Finance Commissions Conclave, Panagariya highlighted the importance of financial self-reliance for development.
The conclave, themed 'Devolution to Development,' was organized by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, focusing on addressing challenges like the timely constitution of State Finance Commissions and strengthening mechanisms for smooth fund flow to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). Discussions centered on fostering financial autonomy among panchayats and strategies for enhancing local revenue sources.
Panchayati Raj Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj emphasized the integration of thought and action between central and state finance commissions, stating the conclave brought stakeholders together on a single platform. Key representatives from various ministries and expert institutions participated in the event to ensure a cohesive approach to resource devolution.
