The Punjab State Election Commission on Wednesday announced a schedule for updating electoral rolls in preparation for elections in five municipal corporations and 43 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. This move aligns with the Supreme Court's directive requiring prompt action on municipal elections.
The Supreme Court had previously instructed the Punjab government and the state election commission to set election dates and complete the process within eight weeks. The order followed the Punjab government's appeal against an October 19 High Court decision demanding elections within 15 days, despite pending delimitation exercises.
The elections, which have been pending for up to three years in areas including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Phagwara, will proceed with draft electoral rolls released on November 14. Residents may file claims or objections from November 18 to 25. Final electoral rolls are due to be published on December 7.
