Escalating Tensions: Israel and Hezbollah Lock Horns in Violent Confrontations
Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah-controlled areas in Beirut for a second day, eradicating buildings and causing casualties. The strikes coincide with U.S. attempts to mediate a ceasefire in Lebanon amidst ongoing conflict with Hezbollah. Hezbollah's retaliatory attacks include rocket and drone strikes on Israel.
For a second day, Israeli airstrikes battered Hezbollah-controlled areas in Beirut's southern suburbs, erasing half a dozen buildings and taking six lives in a village south of the capital. The escalating violence unfolds as Lebanon awaits the U.S.'s latest ceasefire proposal, a venture led by White House envoy Amos Hochstein.
Despite Israel's intensive air assaults — including nine weapons depots and command centers — Hezbollah remains undeterred, maintaining its rocket fire into Israeli territory. The increasing conflict dates back to late September when Israel launched a major offensive following a year of cross-border skirmishes parallel to the Gaza war.
As diplomacy to resolve the conflict falters, the international community, including the U.S., emphasizes the need for a ceasefire based on U.N. Resolution 1701. However, both Lebanon and Israel accuse the other of violating the resolution meant to disarm Hezbollah and establish peace.
