In a pivotal ruling on Wednesday, a court sentenced Uday Chandra to a decade of rigorous imprisonment for his role in the 2020 dowry death of his wife, Shobha Devi. The case underscores the persistent issue of dowry demands, as Chandra sought a motorcycle as part of the arrangement.
Shobha Devi's father, Shivmohan, took a stand against the demands. He filed a complaint on July 16, 2020, at Saini Police Station, accusing Chandra of daily violence against his daughter, culminating in her strangulation the previous day, according to Additional District Government Advocate Anirudh Kumar Mishra.
The verdict was delivered by Additional District Judge Vishnu Dev Singh, who convicted Chandra and also imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 14,000. The case serves as a significant reminder of the ongoing battle against dowry-related crimes.
