A horrific hit-and-run attack unfolded at a sports centre in Zhuhai, China, claiming 35 lives and leaving 43 individuals severely injured, local authorities confirmed on Tuesday. The shocking incident has gripped national attention and prompted a governmental response.
According to Zhuhai police, the suspect, a 62-year-old man identified only by his surname Fan, allegedly plowed a small off-road vehicle into a crowd of people exercising outside the centre on Monday evening. The attack occurred at 7:48 p.m. local time. He was later detained by police after self-inflicting injuries with a knife.
President Xi Jinping has instructed for comprehensive care of the victims and mandated stringent punishment for the accused. This incident adds to growing concerns over public safety in China, particularly as it coincides with the country's largest air show in Zhuhai and follows a series of knife attacks in major cities.
