Former MP Kadir Rana and 24 others have been charged with violating the Model Code of Conduct in the Meerapur assembly constituency, according to police reports on Monday. The group allegedly held an unauthorized election meeting at a panchayat building, despite restrictions in place due to the November 20 bypoll.
Circle Officer Yatendra Singh Nagar confirmed that an FIR against 25 individuals, including Rana, has been registered. Candidates are only permitted door-to-door canvassing, yet Rana organized a meeting in support of his daughter-in-law Sumbul Rana's candidacy for the Samajwadi Party.
This incident marks the second time Kadir Rana has breached the code in Meerapur. It comes amidst a tense by-election holding 11 candidates due to the previous legislator getting elected to Lok Sabha, among broader electoral developments across Uttar Pradesh.
