The Supreme Court has issued a stern rebuke to the Delhi police for what it called a "mere eyewash" in enforcing the firecracker ban in the capital. The Court criticized the police for only seizing raw materials rather than taking comprehensive action.
Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih directed the Delhi police commissioner to immediately inform all relevant stakeholders about the ban and ensure there is no further sale or production of firecrackers. A special cell is to be formed for the effective implementation of this directive.
The Court questioned the state's delay in enforcing the ban and emphasized that the right to a pollution-free environment is a fundamental constitutional right. The Delhi government has been tasked with deciding on a perpetual ban by November 25 after consultations with stakeholders.
