All pet shops and dog breeding centres across Delhi have been instructed to register with the Delhi Animal Welfare Board within a month. This new directive comes in response to a Delhi High Court order to enforce accountability and compliance with animal welfare regulations.
The mandatory registration, outlined in a public notice by the Delhi Animal Welfare Board dated November 6, is a step toward improving the treatment of animals and ensuring establishments meet legal standards. Non-compliance will result in shutdowns as stipulated by the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017, and the Pet Shop Rules, 2018.
Animal rights activists advocate for the change, asserting that it will bolster ethical pet ownership and address issues such as improper breeding and inadequate animal care. Authorities are disseminating information through media channels to urge compliance, highlighting the significance for both animal welfare and community standards.
