UN Urges Probe into Bangladesh Unrest and Calls for Truth and Healing
A UN official has called for an investigation into violence during protests in Bangladesh, which led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The official emphasized the need for truth, healing, and protection for minorities. Over 1,000 deaths were reported during the July-August unrest.
A United Nations official on Wednesday called for an investigation into the killings during the recent unrest in Bangladesh. The demonstrations, which culminated in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, highlighted the urgent need for a national truth and healing process.
The protests, initially sparked by a student-led movement against job quotas, saw large-scale violence and forced Hasina to seek refuge in India. An interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is now in charge. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stressed the necessity of addressing the brutal events of July and August.
In addition to investigating the violence against protesters, Türk emphasized the need for urgent action against reported attacks on minorities. The fact-finding mission is tasked with ensuring accountability for the incidents occurring between Aug. 5 and Aug. 15. Authorities are urged to conduct thorough investigations and hold those responsible accountable.
