In a strong statement on Wednesday, PDP leader Waheed Para urged the scrapping of the reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir. Para highlighted concerns that the policy might jeopardize the long-term quality of institutions.
Reflecting his concerns on social media, Para noted that only 40% of the candidates in the J&K PSC 2023 exam secured seats through open merit. This comes despite over 70% of the population being unreserved, raising questions over the policy's fairness.
He pointed out that among the 71 selected candidates for a medical examination, 42 hailed from reserved categories. Para stressed that the government should reconsider the reservation policy to better reflect the region's demographic distribution.
