Diplomatic Tensions: Canada's Allegations Against Indian Minister
Canada has accused Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, a key figure in the Modi administration, of orchestrating plots targeting Sikh separatists in Canada. The Indian government has denied any involvement, dismissing Canada's allegations as unfounded. This diplomatic tension has strained India's relations with Canada and the US.
The Canadian government on Tuesday accused Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah of orchestrating plots against Sikh separatists on Canadian soil, an allegation India swiftly denied. The charges have exacerbated tensions between Ottawa and New Delhi, already strained by previous expulsions of diplomats over related issues.
According to Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison, the allegations, first reported by The Washington Post, implicate Shah, considered a key figure in Prime Minister Modi's government. India's official response remained dismissive, labeling the allegations as flimsy and part of a broader narrative they contest.
Historically, India has labeled Sikh separatists as 'terrorists,' following violent uprisings in the 1980s and 1990s. These accusations further complicate India's diplomatic relations with Canada and the United States, especially with the looming specter of geopolitical interests involving China.
