A tragic incident unfolded in Assam's Dhemaji district as a poverty-stricken labourer reportedly sold his 25-day-old infant for Rs 30,000, resulting in prompt intervention by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The baby was rescued from the home of a doctor, as confirmed by local officials on Tuesday.
Rupali Deka Borgohain, chairperson of the district's CWC, stated that a formal complaint has been lodged at the Silapathar police station against the infant's parents, the buyer, and intermediaries involved in the transaction.
The sequence of events began when the infant was born on October 4 at Assam Medical College and Hospital. Despite attempts by the Child Helpline, Dhemaji, to trace the parents, they initially failed to appear before the CWC. But later, it was discovered that they had sold the infant to Pegu Sohoria and her husband. The child was eventually rescued based on a tip-off, and authorities have intensified their investigation into the matter.
