Acting President Paul Mashatile has declared a Special Official Funeral Category 2 in honor of Membathisi Mphumzi Shepherd Mdladlana, former Minister of Labour and High Commissioner to Canada, who passed away on 18 October 2024 at the age of 72. The funeral will take place in Cape Town on Saturday, 26 October 2024, with ceremonial elements presented by the South African Police Service. The National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country from Wednesday until the evening of the funeral.

Mashatile expressed his condolences to Mdladlana's family and friends, praising the late Minister's service to the nation. Mdladlana was a veteran educator, ANC activist, and founding member and first president of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU). He was appointed Minister of Labour by President Nelson Mandela in 1998 and retained the role under Presidents Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema Motlanthe, and Jacob Zuma, serving until 2009.

Throughout his career, Mdladlana played a key role in South Africa's early democratic transformation, particularly in drafting the Bill of Rights and shaping the country’s labour policies. His international service included diplomatic roles as Ambassador to Burundi and High Commissioner to Canada.

The Presiding Officers of Parliament, led by National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, lauded Mdladlana as a stalwart of democracy and a champion of education. They highlighted his foundational contributions to both South Africa’s Constitution and its education system. His leadership in SADTU was instrumental in professionalizing the teaching profession and advocating for educators' rights.
