Two nights of unrest have erupted in the Lisbon suburb of Amadora following the fatal police shooting of a Black man. According to reports and television footage, buses and bins were set on fire and stones flung.
Authorities noted that the disruption began after a 43-year-old man was shot dead by police in the early hours of Monday, with about 30 individuals protesting on the first night. The number of protesters on the second night remains unclear.
Authorities said three individuals have been arrested, with two policemen and two other people injured. Riot police were deployed to manage the situation, while firefighters extinguished fires. Police stated that the shooting occurred after the victim fled and tried to attack officers with a knife. An inquiry into the potential use of excessive force has been promised, as calls for justice mount.
