The Hong Kong government is implementing a ban on certain popular applications such as WhatsApp and WeChat on work computers used by civil servants. This decision, stemming from IT security guidelines by the Digital Policy Office, has caused inconvenience among many workers.

Despite the ban, government employees will still have access to these applications via personal devices while at work. Exceptions to the ban can be provided with managerial consent. Information technology experts have noted that similar policies are already in place in various companies to combat risks associated with data leaks and cyber threats.

Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology, and Industry, emphasized the necessity of these measures as hacking incidents grow more prevalent. Supporting this policy, Anthony Lai of VX Research highlighted the lack of adequate cybersecurity awareness and monitoring. Meanwhile, past data breaches have compromised the privacy of numerous citizens, raising alarms regarding information security.
