Escalating Conflict: Haitian Gangs Wreak Havoc

Haitian gangs are stepping up their offensive, launching attacks on territories outside their current control. The United Nations' Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) issued a warning on Tuesday after observing a surge in violence from an alliance of armed groups in the nation.

Maria Isabel Salvador, head of BINUH, informed the U.N. Security Council about the deteriorating situation. Over a year after the Council endorsed an international security force to aid local police, only a fraction of the pledged 3,000 troops have been deployed. Additionally, an alliance known as Viv Ansanm has expanded as financial support remains inadequate.

The violence has led to a humanitarian crisis, with over 4,200 people fleeing their homes and taking refuge in temporary shelters such as schools and churches. As tensions rise between the prime minister and the presidential council, the Haitian government faces increasing distrust from its citizens.
