In a significant ruling, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the police in Jabalpur to ensure the safety of an interfaith couple planning to marry. This intervention came after a BJP MLA opposed the union, citing concerns of 'love jihad'.
The couple, who have been in a live-in relationship for a year, sought judicial protection, fearing for their safety amidst threats from family members. Justice Vishal Dhagat recorded statements from both parties in a private chamber, emphasizing the threats they faced.
Under the court's directive, police are tasked with safeguarding both individuals until their marriage under the Special Marriage Act on November 12. Any attempt to harass or restrain them will lead to legal action, the court affirmed.
