In a pivotal move, the Calcutta High Court has instructed that the suspension of 57 medics and students from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital remain unenforced until a definitive decision is taken by the West Bengal government. The High Court's order comes in response to allegations that these medics contributed to an intimidating culture within the institution.
A notable incident that intensified the situation was the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee inside the medical college on August 9, which ignited widespread demands for justice and heightened workplace security. The suspended medics claimed their suspension on October 5 was arbitrary, allegedly propelled by the college's special council members without appropriate authority.
Justice Kausik Chanda emphasized that the resolution by the college council lacks enforceability at present. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, overseeing the Health sector, voiced concern over the council's actions, urging adherence to due process. The unfolding developments highlight the ongoing discourse surrounding safety and governance in West Bengal's medical institutions.
