Eighty-five Indian nationals have been released by the Russian military amid ongoing efforts to free 20 more. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the progress on Monday.

The issue is expected to be a focus during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS Summit in Kazan on Tuesday. The two leaders had previously discussed this matter in Moscow in July.

Misri mentioned that Indian officials are in constant communication with Russian counterparts in the foreign and defense ministries to address the situation involving Indians contracted in the Russian Army under complex circumstances.
