Battle for Port-au-Prince: The Rise of the Viv Ansanm Coalition
The Viv Ansanm gang coalition has been aggressively expanding its control in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, amid clashes with police and threats against journalists. Formed in September 2023 by uniting two large rival gangs, this coalition triggered the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry and intensified anti-gang missions.
On Monday, Haitian police engaged in violent confrontations with gunmen attempting to seize control of Solino, one of the few remaining neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince not under gang domination.
Solino, under attack since Thursday, prompted desperate residents to call radio stations for help. Gun-toting gang members filmed themselves proclaiming dominance over parts of Solino, warning non-affiliates of the "Viv Ansanm" alliance would be "burned to ashes".
Formed in September 2023, Viv Ansanm, a collaboration of former rival gang federations, has orchestrated large-scale assaults on governmental sites this year, leading to the Prime Minister's resignation. Despite territorial disputes now falling, a report highlights the continued threat posed by this unified criminal entity.
