On October 20, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated Phase II of the Tsatsadu micro-hydropower generation plant, located at the picturesque Tsatsadu waterfalls in Alavanyo, Hohoe District, Volta Region. This project, entirely engineered by Ghanaian professionals from the Bui Power Authority (BPA) and primarily financed through internal resources, builds upon the initial phase commissioned by President Akufo-Addo in December 2020. While Phase I generated 45 kilowatts (KW) of power, the new Phase II adds an impressive 75 KW to the national grid.

During the commissioning ceremony, Vice President Bawumia emphasized the importance of these projects in diversifying Ghana's energy mix and reducing dependency on oil and gas for electricity generation. He also inaugurated a Centre of Excellence, established by the BPA to provide practical training for engineering students, showcasing the government's commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in the energy sector.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

Dr. Bawumia commended the BPA’s efforts in expanding their energy generation portfolio, highlighting the recent completion of a 5 MW solar farm at the Bui Dam. He outlined ambitious plans for the future, stating, "As I have indicated in my Manifesto for the 2024 elections, I will work to introduce 2,000 MW of solar power into our energy mix. This will significantly reduce the cost of electricity, lower the cost of living, and ease the operational burden on businesses. Moreover, the solar panels will be manufactured locally, creating jobs for our youth."

Kofi Dzamesi, the CEO of the Bui Power Authority, shared that the BPA is actively exploring the development of additional micro-hydro facilities, including further enhancements at the Tsatsadu waterfalls, to bolster power supply for the national grid.

Support for Hohoe EP Senior High School Cadet Corps

In a separate engagement, Vice President Bawumia honored his promise to provide logistics to the Cadet Corps of Hohoe EP Senior High School. He had previously made this commitment during the school's 60th Anniversary celebrations in May 2023. At a brief ceremony, he presented uniforms, boots, scarves, and other essential supplies to the Cadet Corps, reinforcing his dedication to supporting education and youth development.

"Last year, I made a promise to you, and being a man of my word, I am here today to fulfill that promise. I have heard your request for a school bus, and God willing, next year when I am president, you will have a brand new school bus," Dr. Bawumia assured the students and faculty.

With the commissioning of the Tsatsadu micro-hydropower plant and the support for Hohoe EP SHS, Vice President Bawumia is actively positioning himself as a leader focused on sustainable energy solutions and educational advancement. His commitment to expanding Ghana's renewable energy capabilities and supporting youth initiatives reflects a broader vision for the country's development and resilience in the face of global challenges.
