On October 21, 2024, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) kicked off the 12th edition of their Joint Military Training (JMT) exercise at Air Force Station Kalaikunda, West Bengal. This year’s exercise emphasizes enhancing interoperability and combat readiness between the two air forces through rigorous training and collaborative efforts.

A Focus on Advanced Air Combat and Knowledge Exchange

The bilateral phase of the exercise will run from November 13 to 21, 2024, and is expected to feature advanced air combat simulations, joint mission planning, and comprehensive debriefing sessions. The primary goal is to foster deeper collaboration and promote the exchange of knowledge between the two forces, further strengthening their operational capabilities.

The RSAF is participating with its largest contingent to date, which includes aircrew and support personnel from its F-16 and F-15 squadrons, as well as G-550 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft and C-130 transport aircraft. The IAF will showcase a diverse array of aircraft, including Rafale, Mirage 2000 ITI, Su-30 MKI, Tejas, MiG-29, and Jaguar.

Strengthening Bilateral Defense Ties

Since its inception, the JMT exercise has been conducted under the framework of a bilateral agreement between India and Singapore. This edition of the exercise follows the RSAF's participation in Ex-Tarang Shakti, one of the largest multinational aerial exercises hosted by the IAF, reflecting the growing professional association between the two air forces.

In addition to the air operations, personnel from both air forces will engage in various sports and cultural activities over the next seven weeks, allowing for further interaction and exchange of best practices.

A Testament to Enduring Collaboration

JMT-2024 underscores the strong bilateral defence relationship that has developed over years of collaboration and joint exercises. This partnership exemplifies the mutual respect and trust that has been built between India and Singapore, highlighting their commitment to maintaining regional security and stability in an increasingly complex security environment.

As the exercise progresses, both air forces aim to enhance their capabilities, fostering a stronger defence posture and setting the stage for future collaborations in various operational scenarios.
