Jharkhand's election landscape witnessed a significant change as the Election Commission appointed Ajay Kumar Singh, the senior-most IPS officer, as the state's new Director General of Police. This decision follows the removal of Anurag Gupta from the acting DGP position due to his history of election-related misconduct.
Singh, a distinguished officer from the 1989 batch of the Indian Police Service, was chosen from a shortlist of three candidates submitted by the state government as ordered by the poll authority. This move comes ahead of the two-phase state elections scheduled for November 13 and 20.
The Commission's directive was clear, ensuring the immediate transfer of DGP responsibilities to the senior-most officer within the cadre as an interim step, and asking the state government to provide the panel of candidates by October 21, to facilitate a swift appointment.
