Over 500 individuals were booked in Budhana following protests triggered by rumors that a youth, detained for an 'objectionable' social media post against Islam, had been released, according to officials on Sunday. Security measures in the town have since been intensified.
Protesters faced charges for raising 'objectionable slogans,' rumor-mongering, and vandalism at the shop of Nikhil Tyagi, who was arrested after making controversial comments. Authorities stated those protesters violated the model code of conduct amid by-elections in the Meerapur constituency of Muzaffarnagar district.
Superintendent of Police Abhishek Singh confirmed that charges were filed against 500-700 individuals. Additional forces ensured security, quelling unrest after protesters were informed of Tyagi's custody, based on a complaint by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind's Mufti Nazeer Ahmed. Senior officials called for peace and harmony.
