The US is currently investigating a breach involving classified documents that outline Israel's strategic intent to launch an attack on Iran, three American officials have informed The Associated Press. A fourth official has validated the authenticity of these documents.
Described as top secret, the documents are associated with the US Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency. They reveal that Israel is positioning military assets as a counterstrike to Iran's aggressive ballistic missile assault on October 1. These files were accessible to the 'Five Eyes' nations – the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Initially reported by CNN and Axios and uploaded to Telegram, the documents are the focus of an investigation. Officials are exploring whether a deliberate leak by an intelligence community member or an external hack led to this exposure and whether it compromised other sensitive intelligence.
The documents come to light as the US urges Israel to capitalize on the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and aims for a ceasefire in Gaza, while also warning against expanding its military actions in northern Lebanon to avoid a regional conflict. Israel, however, remains firm on retaliating against Iran's missile attack. The Pentagon acknowledged the document reports but refrained from any additional comments.
