In a significant legal move, a Cyprus court has ordered the detention of eight Syrian nationals for six days on suspicions of financing a 'terrorist organisation' in their home country.
According to police spokesperson Christos Andreou, the accused, seven men and one woman, are charged under anti-terrorism legislation, as well as for alleged involvement in a criminal organisation and conspiracy. The arrests followed coordinated police raids in Limassol and Paphos, based on a confidential tipoff.
While the authorities have clarified that the suspects are not believed to have been planning an attack on Cypriot soil, investigations continue into potential funding sources, including drug-related activities.
