Vietnam has voiced strong condemnation against China following an alleged attack by Chinese law enforcement on Vietnamese fishermen near the Paracel Islands, a region fraught with territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
According to Vietnamese state media, the assault left three fishermen with broken limbs and others with various injuries. The attack, which reportedly involved iron sticks wielded by an estimated 40 assailants, was first reported by radio on Sunday. Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed the assault to Chinese personnel, asserting it represented a violation of Vietnamese sovereignty and international law.
China has not yet responded to these accusations. The incident underscores ongoing tensions over territorial rights in the South China Sea, a critical waterway for global trade, with China being increasingly assertive in its regional claims.
