British police announced on Wednesday that they were probing reports of gunshots aimed at a taxi in central London, which was allegedly transporting Ian Hislop, the editor of the satirical news magazine, Private Eye. Although police did not identify Hislop, they confirmed in a statement that the suspected firearm discharge occurred on Tuesday morning on Dean Street in Soho.
The Guardian newspaper corroborated that Hislop was in the taxi at the time. "The driver of a London black taxi reported he was stationary in traffic when a shot was fired towards his vehicle, striking the window. There were no injuries," a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police stated. He added, "An investigation has been launched and road closures remain in place."
Hislop, 64, who has edited Private Eye since 1986, has not yet commented on the incident. The fortnightly magazine is famous for its sharp satire of British politicians and its investigative reporting.
