Russian troops have reached the centre of Vuhledar, a crucial high ground position in eastern Ukraine that has withstood Russian assaults since Moscow's full-scale invasion, according to the regional governor of Ukraine's Donetsk region.

Vadym Filashkin, the governor, described the situation in Vuhledar as extremely difficult, noting that Russian forces have encroached upon the city's centre after intensifying their offensive push in recent days. Filashkin stressed the danger for civilians in the region and urged them to evacuate.

Despite a high cost in casualties, the advance of Russian troops represents significant progress since their rapid movements in August. Oleksandr Musienko, a Ukrainian military analyst, emphasized the strategic importance of Vuhledar's defence in disrupting further enemy advances in the Donetsk region.
