The alleged adulteration of Tirupati laddus with animal fats has come under scrutiny by the Supreme Court, halting the ongoing investigation led by the Andhra Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT). The probe, initiated by the state government, had been examining the procurement and sampling processes over the past two days.
According to Andhra Pradesh DGP Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, the SIT had been tasked with understanding the process of how the laddus could be adulterated. 'First they (SIT) have to understand the process, study it and take all the information,' said Rao while speaking to reporters.
However, the Supreme Court order necessitated a temporary halt to the investigation. 'In the meantime, an order has come from the Supreme Court and in line with that, we have stopped it (probe),' Rao added. The apex court is scheduled to hear a batch of pleas, including those calling for a court-monitored investigation, on October 3.
