British foreign minister David Lammy reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire amid concerns of escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon. During a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday, Lammy emphasized the urgency of the matter.
"We've both seen reports suggesting a potential new phase for Israel in Lebanon," Lammy told Sky News, amidst growing signs that Israeli ground troops could soon be deployed in Lebanon. "We both concurred with the stance taken at the U.N. last week that the best path forward is an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for a political resolution."
Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesperson also called for restraint from all parties involved. Lammy reiterated the government's recommendation for British nationals to leave Lebanon, emphasizing the availability of commercial flights for evacuation.
