Tensions in Middle East Rise as Israel Prepares for Ground Invasion
Israeli troop movements suggest an imminent ground invasion of southern Lebanon. This comes after Hassan Nasrallah's assassination, significant Hezbollah losses, and continued airstrikes. The U.S. called for a ceasefire amid escalating conflict involving Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran, raising international concerns.
Indications grew on Monday that Israel was on the verge of sending ground troops into Lebanon, two weeks into an assault on the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia following the assassination of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
A U.S. official, on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the positioning of Israeli troops suggested a ground incursion could be imminent. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the next phase of the conflict along Lebanon's southern border would begin soon, aimed at bringing home Israelis who have fled Hezbollah rockets during nearly a year of border warfare.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah's deputy leader, Naim Qassem, declared the group is ready for a ground engagement. As Israeli airstrikes continued in Beirut and elsewhere, the Lebanese government reported civilian casualties and massive displacement.
