Some of the hundreds of Lebanese citizens who arrived in Istanbul on Monday after fleeing Israeli airstrikes in their homeland said they were shaken but hopeful to return home soon. Israel's attacks over two weeks have killed approximately 1,000 people, including several Hezbollah commanders, according to the Lebanese government. Many have fled their homes.
Middle East Airlines flights from Beirut to Istanbul were sold out on Monday, according to the company's website. Conversely, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines have cancelled their flights to Beirut in the coming days. "The situation in Lebanon is very critical. The war is intensifying dramatically, with numerous bombings in Beirut. We hear military flights constantly overhead," said 33-year-old Beirut resident Aref Arhad, who arrived in Istanbul on Monday.
Arhad expressed hope to return to Beirut in a few days if conditions improve. Meanwhile, Lina Diab, a Lebanese journalist, stated she left her still-safe neighborhood as a precaution. "We prefer to avoid stress, so I chose to come to Istanbul temporarily to wait and watch what happens," Diab said while waiting for her luggage. "Hopefully, we can go back soon to Lebanon."
