The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has initiated suo motu proceedings in response to a media report regarding the tragic electrocution deaths of two Scheduled Tribe students at a government-run hostel in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred on September 25, 2024, while the students were cleaning a water tank, reportedly on the instructions of the hostel superintendent.

According to the media report published on September 26, the students came into contact with a live wire connected to a water pump inside the tank. Villagers discovered them lying in the tank and immediately alerted the hostel authorities.

The NHRC expressed serious concerns over the alleged human rights violations involving the students. The commission noted that if the report is accurate, it raises alarming questions about the insensitivity of hostel authorities who instructed the young boys to undertake such a dangerous task, ultimately leading to their tragic deaths.

In light of these findings, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Madhya Pradesh, requesting a comprehensive report within two weeks. This report is expected to include details on the ongoing police investigation and any compensation provided to the families of the deceased students.
