The Supreme Court on Monday expressed strong disapproval over the inclusion of former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which sought an in-house inquiry against him for dismissing a previous plea related to a service dispute.
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading the bench, sternly questioned the grounds for making a judge a respondent in such matters, emphasizing the need for maintaining judicial dignity. He addressed the Pune-based litigant, highlighting that Ranjan Gogoi's past role as the Chief Justice warranted respect and proper procedural conduct.
The bench, comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, underscored that the petitioner should have pursued a curative petition rather than a PIL following the dismissal of his original plea. The CJI instructed the petitioner to remove Gogoi's name from the list of parties involved.
