The government of Himachal Pradesh has mandated that shopkeepers display their identity cards prominently at their shops, a measure announced on Wednesday.

Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh stated that the decision stems from local concerns about the increasing number of migrants. 'We have decided to make it mandatory for street vendors to display their ID cards issued by the street vendor's committee,' Singh explained.

This initiative follows a similar policy implemented by the Uttar Pradesh government, which faced significant controversy. Additionally, the food supplies department will monitor street vendors, particularly those selling food items, for hygiene and quality.

On Friday, Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania established a seven-member committee led by Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan to develop a comprehensive street vendor policy. Other members include Vikramaditya Singh, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh, Congress MLA Harish Janartha, and BJP MLAs Anil Sharma, Satpal Singh Satti, and Randhir Sharma.

The policy decision follows widespread protests against the demolition of alleged unauthorized portions of a mosque in Sanjauli. Demonstrators from Hindu organizations have called for the registration of outside workers and the issuance of street vendor licenses exclusively to locals.
