A Mumbai magistrate court on Tuesday accepted the CBI's closure report in the Central Bank of India cheating case involving BJP functionary Mohit Kamboj and others.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate V R Patil accepted the Central probe agency's report, thereby disposing of the case. The detailed order has yet to be released.

In a notable development, the court had previously rejected the CBI's closure report last October, citing a prima facie case for criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery against the accused.

The special CBI court overruled this decision in February 2024, directing a fresh hearing. The special public prosecutor for the CBI argued there was no dishonest intent on the part of the borrowers during the investigation.

The borrowers had made a one-time settlement with the bank, negating any grounds for a cheating offense, as submitted by the CBI.

According to the probe agency, Kamboj, chairman and managing director of Tenet Exim Private Limited, and several others allegedly defrauded the Central Bank of India for Rs 103 crore using false documents.

The CBI argued for case closure, citing insufficient evidence to prosecute Kamboj's company and its directors.
