Phillip Mark Mehrtens, a New Zealand pilot held hostage for over a year in Indonesia's restive Papua region, was freed by separatist rebels on Saturday.

Mehrtens, 38, from Christchurch and employed by Susi Air, was abducted on February 7, 2023, from a remote airport. He expressed immense relief and gratitude for his release during a news conference in Timika, stating, “Today I finally got out. I am so happy to be back home with my family soon.”

The rebels, seeking independence for Papua, had initially demanded sovereign status for its release. However, negotiations involving local churches, community leaders, and media coverage led to Mehrtens' freedom. The operation was lauded for achieving the release without casualties. New Zealand and Indonesian officials praised the cooperation and patience demonstrated during the protracted negotiations.
