Americans now have the convenience of renewing their passports online, effectively bypassing the traditionally cumbersome mail-in application process that often led to delays.

The State Department announced on Wednesday that its online passport renewal system has become fully operational.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated, "By offering this online alternative to the traditional paper application process, the Department is embracing digital transformation to offer the most efficient and convenient passport renewal experience possible."

Following staffing shortages primarily caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in lengthy passport processing delays, the department has significantly ramped up hiring and introduced technological improvements that have reduced wait times by about one-third compared to last year. Currently, most applications are completed in substantially less than the previously advertised six to eight weeks, and the newly implemented online system is expected to further reduce this timeframe.

The new system allows renewal applicants to skip the existing process of printing and mailing paper applications and checks, instead submitting their documents and payments through a secure website, Travel.State.Gov/renewonline.
