Historic German Naval Transit Through Taiwan Strait Amid Rising Tensions

Two German navy ships, including a frigate, sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Friday, marking the first such transit in two decades during a period of escalating tensions between Taipei and Beijing. China claims Taiwan as its own and asserts sovereignty over the strait, whereas the United States and Taiwan consider it an international waterway crucial for global trade.

Speaking from Berlin, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed the passage of the frigate 'Baden-Württemberg' and the supply ship 'Frankfurt am Main.' Pistorius emphasized that international waters remain open for navigation, stating that the route was chosen for its safety and efficiency given current weather conditions.

Reactions were swift. While Taiwan's defense ministry declined to comment, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson condemned the transit as a violation of China's sovereignty. The incident underscores Germany's alignment with its allies to uphold international maritime rules, amidst increasing Chinese military activities around Taiwan.
