Malaysian Police Investigate Islamic Business Group Amid Child Abuse Allegations

Malaysian police announced on Friday that they will summon the top executives of an Islamic business group following the rescue of children from charity homes allegedly managed by the organization. These homes were found to have children who had suffered injuries consistent with both sexual and physical assault.

The police conducted raids at 20 premises this week, rescuing 402 children and youths. The operations were reportedly managed by Islamic conglomerate Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB). GISB has denied running the homes or being involved in any sexual abuse, and did not respond to requests for comment.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain reported that out of the 172 children examined, many displayed old and new injuries, emotional trauma, and signs of stunted growth. Some were disabled or sick, and 13 had been sodomized. The case has brought about widespread outrage in Malaysia, with critics questioning the delay in police action despite complaints dating back to 2011. Razarudin mentioned that 171 people were arrested, with 159 detained pending further investigation.
