Historic NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban Resigns Amid Federal Corruption Probes

New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban has stepped down, ABC disclosed on Thursday, referencing numerous unnamed sources. The announcement follows a week after FBI agents confiscated his phone amid several federal corruption probes that also involve top city administration officials.

Caban made history in July 2023 as the first Hispanic head of the New York Police Department, the largest police force in the United States. Neither the NYPD nor City Hall has yet commented on his resignation.

Federal agents recently seized cellphones from both Caban and his twin brother James, a former officer dismissed from the force in 2021, according to The City. Calls for Caban's resignation grew. Agents also searched other high-ranking officials' homes and seized phones in Mayor Eric Adams' administration. Despite no charges being filed, Adams asserts full cooperation with the ongoing investigations overseen by prosecutors in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
