Wildfire Forces Evacuation of 80 Villagers in Southwestern France
A wildfire in the Pyrenees-Orientales department of southwestern France led to the evacuation of around 80 villagers from Castelnou. The fire, which began in the afternoon, has spread across 400 hectares. Authorities reported no immediate damage or injuries, with a large firefighter contingent and aerial support deployed.
Around 80 villagers were evacuated on Thursday as a wildfire swept through the mountains of southwestern France, local authorities reported.
Originating mid-afternoon, the fire quickly spread over 400 hectares in the Pyrenees-Orientales department. Evacuees from Castelnou, located about 30 km southwest of Perpignan, escaped without injuries or property damage, officials said.
Approximately 300 firefighters, aided by nine airplanes and three helicopters, are battling the blaze. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin provided updates in a social media post, confirming the extensive emergency response.
