The Odisha government on Wednesday commenced relief and restoration efforts in the heavily rain-stricken districts of Malkangiri and Koraput, as floodwaters began to recede from affected villages. State Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari addressed the Assembly, responding to an inquiry by BJD member P K Deb regarding the flash flood scenario in the southern districts.

According to Pujari, Malkangiri bore the brunt of the heavy rains caused by a deep depression, while Koraput experienced a somewhat lower impact. He noted that road connectivity was disrupted at 14 points in Malkangiri and six in Koraput due to the flash floods.

The minister explained that Malkangiri's geographical attributes hinder rapid drainage of rainwater, but emphasized that prior warnings of the extreme rainfall enabled effective management of the situation. Continuous communication between district administrations and state authorities, including the Chief Secretary and the Home Ministry, was instrumental in coordinated efforts, along with oversight by the Special Relief Commissioner's office.

Pujari assured that the crisis was under control, with rescue teams from ODRAF, Fire Service, and NDRF deployed for swift rescue missions. Nearly 1,780 individuals were relocated to temporary relief shelters in Malkangiri, receiving essential supplies such as food, water, medicines, and medical checkups. A post-flood damage assessment and corresponding compensation, in line with the Odisha Relief Code, will be conducted soon.

Lawmakers from different parties have pressed the government to speed up compensation for house and crop damages. Early reports from Malkangiri suggest residents are returning home as floodwaters recede, beginning repairs on their houses. Preliminary assessments indicate that 176 houses in Koraput and 116 in Malkangiri were damaged.
