Science, Innovation, and Technology Minister Judith Collins has unveiled a new initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among New Zealand businesses.

The AI Activator programme will provide businesses with support to unlock the potential of AI, including access to AI research experts, technical assistance, AI tools, and resources, as well as funding and grant opportunities.

"AI is expected to contribute $76 billion to New Zealand’s GDP annually by 2038. It is vital that we help businesses enhance their understanding and use of AI, allowing them to tap into its benefits as global adoption of this technology continues to rise," said Minister Collins.

Additionally, the Government is launching the pilot of GovGPT, a new tool designed to streamline access to reliable government information for businesses and individuals interacting with government agencies. GovGPT represents a significant step toward a ‘digital front door,’ where citizens can find government answers quickly and conveniently.

Both initiatives will be overseen by Callaghan Innovation, which will fund the work through its existing baselines.

"These efforts, along with our strategic focus on AI, reflect the Government’s commitment to safely harnessing AI’s potential for New Zealand’s economy and its people," Collins concluded.
