Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has commended all parties involved in the South African Local Government Bargaining Council (SALGBC) for reaching a groundbreaking multi-year collective agreement.

The five-year deal, signed by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), which represents 257 municipalities, along with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU), guarantees municipal employees a 6% salary increase effective from 1 July 2024, followed by an additional 1.5% from 1 March 2025.

The department lauded the agreement for providing stability to the labour market while ensuring uninterrupted service delivery to communities. The successful negotiations, it added, set a positive precedent for future discussions and underscore the value of collaborative problem-solving.

The agreement also emphasizes the importance of maintaining open communication channels, fostering trust between employers and employees, and enhancing the well-being of the broader community.

Minister Meth highlighted that the peaceful conclusion of the negotiations reflects a commitment to sustainable development and social cohesion. She praised the use of social dialogue as a key tool in resolving labour disputes, which, when free from violence, creates stability in the labour market—essential for attracting investment to address poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

By addressing the needs and concerns of both parties, the agreement is expected to foster a more harmonious and productive work environment, benefiting all stakeholders and contributing to a stronger, more resilient labour market.
