Global Summit Unveils Action-Oriented Blueprint for AI in Military

In a pivotal move, a global summit held in South Korea on Tuesday launched an action-oriented 'blueprint for action' aimed at steering the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in military applications. This more practical set of guidelines follows last year's 'call to action' and seeks to address increasingly complex issues in AI governance.

Despite the ambitious nature of the blueprint, it remains unclear which of the 96 participating nations, including the United States and China, will officially endorse the document. This year's Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM) summit in Seoul showcased a shift from understanding to actionable steps, particularly concerning AI-enabled military technologies such as drones used in Ukraine.

Key elements in the blueprint include measures to prevent AI from facilitating the spread of weapons of mass destruction and ensuring human control over nuclear weapons. The ongoing initiative, co-hosted by nations including the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, strives for a balanced, multi-national dialogue on these critical issues.
